“Floral Design in the Ag Classroom: Teaching, Business, and Blooming Success”

 

This workshop will equip Agriculture Education instructors with the tools, skills, and strategies needed to successfully integrate floral design into their curriculum and high school programs.

Participants will explore how to teach foundational floral design techniques, operate a student-driven floral business, and seamlessly incorporate floral enterprises into the classroom.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Integrate floral design instruction and floral businesses into existing agriculture education curriculum.
  • Teach and demonstrate how to create hand-tied bouquets, recipe-based arrangements of the month, and vase bouquets.
  • Accurately price floral arrangements using formulas appropriate for the classroom and fundraising sales.
  • Understand proper flower preparation, sanitation of materials, and essential supply lists for classroom floral labs.

Participants will get to take home floral arrangements.

Presenter Details

Kim Clark is in her 20th year in education and is in her 12th year teaching Agriculture at Royal Valley, while previously working at the Kansas State Department of Education with Career and Technical Education for four years and at Marysville for four years. Kim advises her student-run greenhouse business as part of her Plant Systems Pathway.

Shelby Siemens is the agriculture instructor at Marysville High School and is in her 9th year of teaching. She previously taught at Tonganoxie. Shelby advises her student-run business, Bulldog Blooms, which is a floral design class that sells monthly floral arrangements.
